ENGLEWOOD - Twelve-thousand patients in five states are being warned of possible privacy breach. The breach did not affect patients in Colorado, but involved an organization based here.
The scam emails targeted employees at the Franciscan Medical Group in Tacoma, WA. The employees were led to believe the messages were from Catholic Health Initiatives, a nonprofit health system headquartered in Englewood that is also the parent company of the Franciscan Medical Group.
On March 28, after identifying the problem, the Franciscan Medical Group began to warn patients that personal information may have been exposed. The health care business said an outside forensics firm confirmed that some of the messages in the exposed accounts could have included names, contact information, dates of birth, clinical information, insurance data and some Social Security numbers.
The affected patients were detailed by Catholic Health Initiatives spokesman Mike Romano:
Tacoma area: 8,300 patients
KentuckyOne Health: 3,543 patients
Chattanooga, TN: 66 patients
Des Moines, IA: 26 patients
Reading, PA: 11 patients
