CO GOP on alert after threats made against them

The Colorado GOP is on alert following two recent threats of violence against Republicans.

"When you have two distinct statements in one week, both centered in Colorado -- I think you start to make that awareness," said Colorado Republican Party Chairman, Steve House.

The party put this post on Facebook Friday, urging its members to "exercise extreme caution" at public meetings. It also encouraged members to tell local law enforcement about meetings in advance and to consider hiring security.

"We need to prepare our membership to know they need to be on guard," said House.

Both threats happened on Thursday.

Police arrested a Fountain woman for a call she made to a Denver Planned Parenthood.

In the call she reportedly said, "It is tempting to walk into a Rrepublican party meeting with her dead husband's gun and just start shooting people."

"That's a serious threat you can't take any threat lightly anymore," said House.

Then, in a Facebook post, Loring Wirbel, the Co-Chair of the Colorado Springs ACLU, threatened to shoot Donald Trump supporters before the election.

At first, Wirbel called it a hoax.

"It looks to me like assembled political attack material that's the only way I can describe it," Wirbel told our affiliate KRDO-TV in Colorado Springs.

Following calls for him to step down, Wirbel resigned on Friday.

House said, regardless, they're not taking any chances.

"We will be aware and we will make sure that our meetings go on safely from here," he said.

House said they do not plan to cancel any upcoming meetings, but will increase security.
