DENVER - A sex offender accused of escaping from Denver Police custody two weeks ago by slipping out of his handcuffs has been formally charged with escape.
Eugene Martinez, 48, is also charged with failure to register as a sex offender. Both charges are felonies.
According to the charges filed by the Denver District Attorney's Office, Martinez was required to register as a sex offender but failed to do so, and on Oct. 9, while he was being processed on that charge, he freed himself from handcuffs and escaped custody while handcuffed to a bench at Denver Police headquarters.
Martinez was arrested in Boulder last weekend, and remains in custody there. He is accused of committing two new sexual assaults Saturday before his arrest and is being investigated for another a few days earlier.
His next Denver court date has not yet been set.
