DENVER - DNA taken during a 2013 drug arrest was crucial to a jury's conviction of the same suspect for a 2001 sexual assault.
Eddie Simon, 46, was found guilty of two counts of sexual assault, Denver District Attorney Spokeswoman Lynn Kimbrough said. He faces sentence of up to life in prison when he is sentenced on June 16.
Charges in the case alleged the victim, then a 20-year-old woman, was leaving her parent's house to return to her own home in the early hours of Feb. 24, 2001. Simon picked her up in his car and took her to a remote area at the old Lowry Air Force Base site where he sexually assaulted her at knifepoint.
Kimbrough said the victim was able to escape, but no suspect was found until Simon's DNA was taken at the time of his 2013 arrest on felony drug charges.
