DENVER - A suspected illegal hash oil operation is the subject of a multi-part investigation after explosions that injured three people Wednesday.
The explosions began around 12:44 p.m. at 1241 South Lipan Street between West Arizona Avenue and West Louisiana Avenue. Fire department spokesman Mark Watson said people were using butane to extract THC from marijuana at the time.
Watson said firefighters found a marijuana grow operation with about 36 plants, but can't find the proper license for the operation. Although it is legal to make hash oil, the operation did not have the required permits from either the City of Denver or the State Marijuana Enforcement Division.
Denver police are also considering a criminal investigation.
Two men and a woman suffered second-degree burns in the explosions Wednesday.
Watson said this was the fifth hash oil explosion and fire since January.
