DNA solves 100th cold case in Denver -- the 1981 and sexual assault of Patricia Beard

DENVER - For the 100th time, the Denver Cold Case Project has used DNA evidence to close a case that had previously been unsolved.

According to Lynn Kimbrough, spokeswoman for the Denver District Attorney, the case solved this time was a sexual assault and murder from 1981.

Hector Bencomo-Hinojos, 53, is charged with first-degree murder after deliberation and felony first-degree murder in the death of 32-year Patricia Beard. He is currently in federal custody in Pennsylvania and now faces extradition.

Beard's body was found in a studio apartment in the 500 block of East 11th Avenue, Kimbrough said. A family member discovered the body on March 27, 1981, after she had not been seen for several days.

The Denver Cold Case Project is a collaboration between the National Institute of Justice and the City of Denver.
