Driver injured in Christmas overnight hit-and-run crash dies; Police say suspect is hospitalized

DENVER - Police apprehended one suspect who ran from an SUV following a crash that killed one person and sent three others to the hospital just after midnight on Christmas.

The crash occurred at 51st Ave. and Peoria St., north of Interstate 70, and resulted in the closure of several area intersections as police investigated. Shattered glass remained in the area on Christmas morning, as did a street sign knocked over by the impact.

Police say the suspect's SUV collided with a van around 12:30 a.m. Police initially said the female driver of the van suffered the most serious injuries but three passengers were also taken to the hospital.

One of those victims later died.

After being apprehended, police say the suspect was also hospitalized. Officers later identified him as Johnny Gilbert, 37.

Gilbert is being held for investigation of vehicular homicide, vehicular assault and felony hit and run.
