DENVER -- The City of Denver honored our fallen heroes this Memorial Day weekend with a special tribute Saturday morning.
Titled "For the Love of Home, Country and Humanity," this year's tribute included a reading of the names, a navy bell toll, and a remembrance wreath laying for servicemen and women that have died in past wars placed by living veterans of previous wars.
A tribute banner and a pin presentation to more than 40 Gold Star families who have lost their loved ones also took place.
The event took place at the POF Hall from 10 a.m. to noon.
Hugh Cumming sat in the front row. The WWII veteran fought in Iwo Jima.
"I grew up there," he said.
Cumming lost lots of brothers there.
"They were really good guys. They served their country. They did a good job. I appreciate every one of them."
Denver Mayor Michael Hancock also attended. He handed out gifts to some of the Gold Star families after their hero's name was announced.
"My grandfather served in WWII," Hancock told Denver7. "This warms my heart."
