A barn that was part of the old Shirley Farm Dairy and Mullen Family Dairy in Denver caught fire Tuesday afternoon.
The fire in the 1895 barn was first reported at 4:04 p.m. on South Knox Court, near Hampden Avenue and Lowell Boulevard.
When firefighters arrived they found heavy smoke and fire coming from the red barn, according to Mike Tyler with the Denver Fire Department.
"[There was] so much stuff inside there, they weren’t able to get very far into the building," Tyler said.
Tyler said firefighters did search and found no one inside.
There's no word yet what caused the fire.
No one was hurt.
In the late 1920s, the Mullen familypurchased a 420-acre plot of land on the outskirts of Denver known as the Shirley Farm Dairy.
The J.K. Mullen Home for Boys started as an orphanage where students worked in the dairy and received training in agriculture and mechanics.
In 1950, the dairy operations ended, boarders and day students started attending the school and the school's name was changed the Mullen High School. In 1966, the last of the orphans graduated and the boarding section was closed.
