Mile High Greyhound Park ready to come to life

It was back in 2008 when the dogs raced one last time at Mile High Greyhound Park. The popular entertainment destination and economic heart of Commerce City came crashing down when the race track was demolished a few years back.

The park employed hundreds of residents and sales tax revenues were reinvested in community projects. When racing ended, visitors and activity slowed.

The Commerce City Urban Renewal Authority purchased the property in August, 2011. Since then, the goal has been to redevelop the 65-acre site as an economic engine.

The concept is bold with plans for a higher educational facility, single and multi-family homes, retail, lodging and office space.

Commerce City community development director Chris Cramer said the ball is rolling. The city has teamed up with master developer Real Estate Generation, LLC.

"We want to make the area the heart of the city once again," Cramer told Denver7.

The next steps include:

  • Zoning and entitlements
  • Approving an urban renewal plan
  • Beginning construction (2017)

According to Commerce City's website, the mixed-use development could create 1,454 permanent employees, generating $65.4 million in income on an annual basis.
