CENTENNIAL, Colo. - Negotiations that began overnight continued into midday, until a man who threatened deputies through the door of a hotel room was taken into custody.
Just before midnight Wednesday, one patron staying in a south-facing room of the Drury Inn at 9445 E. Dry Creek Rd. did something that caused the hotel's staff to call for deputies, said Vince Line, Chief of Public Safety for Arapahoe County Sheriff's Office.
When deputies arrived, the man threatened to shoot them and damage the hotel. He also barricaded himself inside using furniture from within the room.
At that point, the deputies backed away and evacuated the surrounding rooms.
"We do believe he is the only occupant in the room. There is no one in there with him," Line said Thursday morning while the situation was still ongoing.
Several hours after the situation was safely resolved through negotiations, the suspect was identified Michael Alan Connell, 26. He was charged with criminal mischief, false reporting of an explosive device and obstructing a police officer.
After Connell surrendered, the bomb squad did have to evaluate a suspicious package inside. Deputies also found significant damage to the hotel room.
