Child struck and killed in parking lot outside sporting goods store in Brighton

BRIGHTON - A 2 or 3-year-old child was hit by a pickup truck and killed in the parking lot outside a sporting goods store in Brighton Friday afternoon.

Brighton Police say the fatal incident was reported at 4:09 p.m.

AIRTRACKER7 flew over the area around 4:30 p.m. and saw an ambulance and police tape in the parking lot outside the Dicks Sporting Goods at 2269 Prairie Center Parkway -- near Interstate 76.

Brighton Police Department Spokesman Richard Kelly said this incident was not a hit and run. Additionally, he said drugs and alcohol were not believed to be involved.

Witnesses told 7NEWS the little boy was going into the store when he darted into the path of a pickup.  Police radio traffic indicated a wheel of the pickup went over the boy''s torso.

"It was horrible, horrible, " one witness told 7NEWS. "They were doing compressions (on his chest) and no movement."

Police said the pickup truck driver was not speeding or driving recklessly. 

The boy's identity was not released Friday night.
