BRIGHTON, Colo. - Brighton police are investigating a single-car rollover crash that killed a Prairie View High School student and injured three other students midday Tuesday.
The accident happened just before noon on Highway 85 near 144th Avenue and closed the highway in both directions, Brighton police spokesman John Bradley said. He added the some lanes of 85 are expected to reopen soon.
Bradley said a red Toyota sedan carrying the four students was southbound on Highway 85 when the driver changed lanes to overtake another southbound vehicle.
After passing the other vehicle, the Toyota driver appeared to lose control as he moved back into his original lane, causing the car to roll multiple times and come to rest in the highway median, Bradley said.
One passenger died at the scene, a second passenger was airlifted to an area hospital due to the severity of her injuries, and two others were transported by ambulance with less severe injuries, Bradley said.
The names of those killed or injured in the crash are being withheld pending notification of family members.
