BOULDER - An excavator went to work Tuesday demolishing a former Applebee's restaurant to make way for a new Trader Joe's at the Twenty Ninth Street mall in Boulder.
After the brick building at 1906 28th St. is razed, work will follow to construct a 14,000-square-foot Trader Joe's store.
Trader Joe's has said the new store "will feature a festive decor that mixes traditional Trader Joe's elements such as cedar covered walls and Hawaiian motifs, combined with a local flair that includes art celebrating the neighborhood."
Simultaneously, a second Trader Joe's location is under construction in Denver. That store, which is also planned to be 14,000-square-feet, will be located on the southeast corner of Colorado Blvd. and E 8th Ave. A 3,740-square-foot separate wine shop will be adjacent to the grocery store.
