Chautauqua Meadow, surrounding trails in Boulder closed for 'suspicious person' search

BOULDER, Colo. - The Chautauqua Meadow and surrounding trails in Boulder were closed Tuesday after several people reported seeing a man carrying what appeared to be a sniper rifle wrapped in a blanket.

The Boulder County Sheriff's Office says their deputies, Boulder police and officers of other agencies were sent to search the area. Search dogs were also sent to seek the man.

Eventually, at approximately 2:30 p.m., the searchers found the man below the first Flatiron.

"He was in possession of a .22 pellet gun which looked very much like a sniper rifle and which was wrapped in camouflage material," Sheriff's spokeswoman Cmdr. Heidi Prentup wrote.

Boulder's Open Space and Mountain Parks rangers are pursuing charges against the man, Prentup said.
