BOULDER, Colo. -- Boulder is planning to do repair work on three popular trails this fall -- the Chautauqua Trail, the Bear Canyon Trail and part of the Mesa Trail.

"These rebuilding efforts are among 18 flood-repair trail projects that OSMP [Open Space and Mountain Parks] will either begin or complete by the end of 2016," city officials said.

Chautauqua Trail

Work on the Chautauqua Trail will begin as early as September 27.

Crews are scheduled to do some realignment work, resurface the trail and complete some restoration work on the vegetation.

The goal is to improve drainage and minimize trail erosion.

The trail will remain open during the project, but visitors should expect to see some fencing and minor detours, officials said.

The project should be finished by the end of the year.

Bear Canyon Trail & Mesa Trail

Work on the Bear Canyon Trail and Mesa Trail, south of NCAR, is scheduled to begin by October 3.

Crews will repair damage from the September 2013 floods "allowing firefighting and search-and-rescue vehicles to regain access to difficult terrain in Boulder’s mountain backdrop," officials said. "It also will improve trail drainage and sustainability, which will help to make the trails less susceptible to future flood damage while also restoring valuable riparian habitats."

The project will take at least six months to complete and the trails may be closed for several weeks at a time, officials said.

Visitors should check the Bear Canyon Trail website for updates on closures and detours.
