A homeless man with a gun was shot by police at a McDonald's on East Colfax Avenue near Sable Boulevard in Aurora early Sunday.
The homeless man was reportedly loitering inside the fast-food restaurant when he was asked to leave by employees. Refusing to leave, the 23-year-old suspect then showed a gun to staff and police were called, according to an Aurora Police Department spokesman.
Police then confronted the man inside the McDonald's restroom and the suspect was shot in the wrist. "The suspect has non-life threatening wounds," said APD Sergeant Chris Amsler.
Mike Holtz, who was having breakfast with a friend at the time, said about 10 police officers came inside the restaurant. Holtz told Denver7 reporter Kyle Horan he heard a gunshot and saw police officers leaving the scene with the homeless man moments later.
"I heard the gunshots and I was looking around saying, 'hey, what's going on?'" said Holtz. "Then, they [police] drug [sic] the guy out of the bathroom and he was bleeding all over. The paramedics took him away."
No officers were injured in the shooting, but the two officers who went inside the bathroom to confront the man are on paid leave, according to the APD spokesman.
Denver Police will step in to investigate the shooting per police protocol.
The shooting was reported at around 7:33 a.m.
