Suspicious briefcase found in basement of vacant Aurora home

AURORA, Colo. - The Arapahoe County Bomb Squad responded to a vacant Aurora home where contractors reported finding a briefcase that appeared to contain an explosive device.
Contractors were inside the home in the 16100 block of East Mercer Circle cleaning when they found the briefcase. Aurora Police say they were notified about the discovery at approximately 2 p.m.
Police officers were able to contact a previous resident of the home and he was able to explain the briefcase and items in it and that it was not an explosive device. The Arapahoe County Bomb Squad then confirmed device not an explosive, police said.
Earlier, homes on both sides of the house containing the briefcase were evacuated, police said. Others in the neighborhood were also notified by phone.
Police also kept students from Mission Viejo Elementary from walking home past the house in question before it was learned the briefcase did not contain an explosive.
