AURORA, Colo. – A woman and her daughter were not aware their home was being vandalized with hate speech while they were inside Tuesday evening.
Officers were investigating the vandalism in the area East Briarwood Drive and East Arapahoe Road, when they got reports that the home’s front door had the words “KKK” and another racial slur spray painted on it.
"It's very insensitive and disturbing. I can't imagine that anyone would think it's okay to do something like that," the woman said, who only identified herself as Ari.
The family told police they did not hear or see anyone, and that they only found out their home was vandalized after a neighbor told them what had happened, according to Aurora Police Department spokeswoman Diana Cooley.
"This isn't something we're going to write a report and be done," Police Chief Nick Metz said. "We're going to pull out all the stops."
That includes the help of the local NAACP.
"People are emboldened by the political climate thinking they can say and do anything. And the NAACP is not going to tolerate it. And our community is not going to tolerate it," local president Omar Montgomery said.
At this time, police do not have any suspect information. But the victim had a message for the person responsible.
"You're a coward. And your behavior is unacceptable. Your behavior will not be tolerated. And if and when they do find the people responsible, I want them prosecuted to the full extent of the law," she said.
