LARIMER COUNTY, Colo. – Three people, including a juvenile, were critically burned following a home explosion in Larimer County late Tuesday afternoon.

The explosion took place in the 3300 block of South County 1 Tinmath at around 5:18 p.m., according to Larimer County Sheriff’s Office deputies, who responded to the scene.

There was no fire when first responders arrived to the home, but two adults and one juvenile were taken to the hospitals for treatment. Deputies said all three suffered critical burn injuries.

Investigators determined the occupants of the home were conducting their own excavation project when an unintended explosion occurred.

“There are no indications of open gas lines or any type of gas leak from the home,” said a spokesperson for the Larimer County Sheriff’s Office. “Carbon monoxide buildup in the excavation site may have contributed to the explosion.”

Investigators will continue to follow up to determine if there is any evidence of criminal activity. There is no threat to the public.
