A former Colorado state trooper and Granby police officer has been found guilty of "sexting" with a 16-year-old female high school student.
A jury found Jose Sanchez, 36, guilty of enticing the student to send nude photos of herself to him via a cell phone and also of possessing nude photos of the girl.
Sanchez was a police officer when he met the girl and obtained her cell phone number on a call to Middle Park High School in the fall of 2010, according to court testimony. Police learned of the possible relationship in early December, after receiving a tip.
A search warrant for Verizon phone records revealed that as a many as 8,600 texts were exchanged between the two over nearly two months, according to court testimony.
Sanchez was arrested on Dec. 15, 2010, and fired the same day for violating police department policies.
According to testimony and court records, Sanchez also sent two photos of his own genitalia to the girl.
A Grand County jury deliberated two hours on May 27 before finding Sanchez guilty of four counts of sexual exploitation of a child.
He could be sentenced to from 4 to 12 years in prison on each count.
Prior to his job as a police officer, Sanchez worked as a state patrol trooper, assigned to the Granby office. He worked for CSP from January 2005 to May 2008 and left in good standing when he quit, according to the state patrol.
