LOVELAND, Colo. (AP) -- A construction company has agreed to pay $207,000 after a chemical spill killed more than 5,600 fish in northern Colorado's Big Thompson River.
Colorado Parks and Wildlife announced the settlement Thursday and said the money would be spent restoring fish habitat in the river.
The spill occurred in March while American Civil Contractors was reconstructing U.S. 34 in the Big Thompson Canyon west of Loveland after the destructive flood of 2013.
Parks and Wildlife said rainbow trout, brown trout, suckers and dace died in an 8-mile section of the river from Drake to west Loveland.
Company president Randy Maher said American Civil Contractors was devastated by the fish kill.
