Speeding, reckless driving caused semi driver to crash into building in Sterling

STERLING, Colo. -- The driver of a semi truck suffered serious injuries after crashing into a building in Sterling Friday night.

Sterling officials responded to the scene in the area of Main Street and North 5^th Street after getting reports that a tractor-trailer was speeding and driving recklessly on West Main Street traveling east.

At around 8:42 p.m., officers found the semi had struck the southwest area of the old Aarons building, with half of the tractor resting inside the building.

An adult male driver from Nebraska had to extricated from the cab of the tractor and was taken to the Sterling Regional Medical Center Emergency Room with serious injuries.

No one else was injured.

The preliminary investigation indicates speed was a factor and the investigation continues to determine any other possible contributing causes, a Sterling official told Denver7 in a press release.

People were advised to stay away from the area as the building is not structurally safe at this time.
