HUDSON, Colo. -- A woman who was stabbed multiple times in Weld County was rescued by neighbors who used gardening tools to stop the suspect.

Neighbors in the town of Hudson went to her rescue shortly before 8:30 a.m. Sunday, when deputies with the Weld County Sheriff's Office received reports that a woman had been stabbed in the 2000 block of WCR 47.

Once deputies arrived, they found the woman had been stabbed multiple times during a "physical disturbance" inside a home. She was immediately airlifted to Denver Health Medical Center. She is listed in critical condition.

Neighbors were able to stop Johnny Cordova, 41, while they notified law enforcement what had happened, according to a statement by Matt Turner, spokesman for the Weld County Sheriff's Office.

"Residents in the area hit him with gardening equipment in an attempt to subdue him," Turner said.

Cordova, who was taken to Denver Health after he was hit with the tools, will be taken to the Weld County Jail after receiving medical treatment.

Charges are pending. Deputies were still investigating the incident Sunday evening.

"The Weld County Sheriff’s Office would like to thank the good Samaritans who intervened in this incident and came to this woman's aid, ultimately saving her life," Turner said.
