Victim Is Student From Fort Lewis College In Durango

The La Plata County Sheriffs Office is investigating after a college student was found dead at a campsite about 20 miles north of Durango.The victim has been identified as David Jones, 26, said Dan Bender of the La Plata County Sheriff's Office.Deputies said they got a call around 2 a.m. Saturday that a man had been shot at a camp site about four miles north of Henderson Lake on Missionary Ridge.When deputies arrived they found Jones dead from an apparent gunshot wound, Bender said.Jones is from Utah and was a student at Fort Lewis College in Durango.After interviewing witnesses, deputies arrested Brenden Dow Ashburn, 37, from Durango, at the scene, Bender said.A handgun believed to have been used in the shooting was also recovered, he said.Ashburn is being held without bond in the La Plata County Detention Center on a charge of first-degree murder.Investigators are still trying to find a motive for the shooting.
