Denver Woman Vows Circus Protest Fast

Parks Plans Hunger Strike For Duration Of Denver Circus Visit

A Denver woman vows to hold a hunger strike during the Ringling Bros. Barnum & Bailey Circus in Denver.

Kristal Parks protests on the 16th Street Mall.

Kristal Parks said her planned strike is "in sympathy with wild and exotic circus animals, particularly the elephants, tigers and lions."

She'll begin her hunger strike on Wednesday, which coincides with the first of 19 performances of the circus in Denver.

Parks will be in a cage and chains just outside the circus venue before each performance. She also plans to be on the 16th Street Mall during the day with signs that say "The Saddest Show on Earth" and "Elephants Love Freedom Too."

The long-time Denver activist was part of the recent Initiative 100 effort that sought to ban the use of wild and exotic animals in Denver circus performances. The measure lost overwhelmingly, gaining only 28 percent of voters who cast ballots.
