WELD COUNTY, Colo. – A woman charged with abusing her 4-month-old son until he died in August 2015 will head to trial, a county judge determined Wednesday.

Angelica Chavez, 28, of Greeley, is charged with one count of child abuse resulting in the death of her infant son, Donovan.

The boy’s father, Robert Archuleta, and grandmother, Sandy Archuleta face the same charges.

The Weld County District Attorney’s Office says Sandy had been taking care of the boy in the week before his death, but Chavez allegedly knew putting him in his grandmother’s care could have caused him harm.

The infant had broken ribs, chemical burns to his face and mouth, sepsis and bruising. Family members called 911 but the boy died at a Denver hospital.

Chavez is set to be arraigned on the charge Sept. 29. If convicted, she faces up to 48 years in prison.
