DENVER (AP) — The sister of an inmate killed inside a suburban Denver jail has filed a lawsuit against the Arapahoe County Commission, the sheriff and 10 deputies and officers.

The Denver Post reported Wednesday that lawyer John Poor filed a federal civil rights lawsuit in the U.S District Court in Denver on behalf of Nicol Nowlin, sister of Michael Craven who was beaten to death by fellow inmate Eric Stewart.

The lawsuit argues that Stewart should not have been left in the general population cell block after a mental health competency evaluation was ordered for him. It also claims that there was no deputy supervision or active monitoring during the fatal beating.

Sheriff’s Office spokeswoman Julie Brooks declined to comment on the case.
