COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – Authorities are warning runners and trail walkers to be vigilant after a woman was assaulted on a Colorado Springs trail Sunday night.

Police have released few details of the assault, only saying a woman was jogging on a trail near Westmeadow Drive when a man ran up behind her and knocked her to the ground.

The woman described her assailant as a thin, white man who was dressed in all black at the time.

The woman was able to get away from the scene after being knocked down. When police and EMTs arrived, she was taken to Memorial Hospital for evaluation.

The Colorado Springs Police Department says the investigation into the woman’s assault is ongoing.

Authorities say that people should avoid running alone and late at night, not to run with earphones in both ears, to alter their routes and to be practiced in self-defense or carry mace if necessary in order to better-avoid or fight off attacks.
