DENVER -- A Denver Police Department officer and a suicidal man were injured following a shooting in southwest Denver early Saturday morning.

DPD officers were responding to reports of a man threatening suicide at around 4:30 a.m. at a home in the area of South Quitman Street and West Armherst Avenue.

When they arrived at the home, officers learned the man was armed. Officers tried to get the man to cooperate with their commands, but were unsuccessful, according to Denver Police Department spokesperson Sonny Jackson.

The suspect then reportedly shot an officer in the leg. Officers then returned fire.

The officer, who has not been identified, was taken to Denver Health Medical Center to undergo surgery and is expected to recover. The suspect was taken to Swedish Medical Center.

The suspect was out of surgery at around 8:45 a.m. and is in critical condition after suffering serious injuries.

"The family's hearts go out to the police officer and those affected by this morning's tragedy," said a spokesperson for the man's family. "We ask that you please respect our privacy at this time. This comes as a shock to us all."

No other people were shot. Police are investigating the shooting
