DENVER (AP) — A watchdog for the Denver police is urging the department to provide more training to officers on when to activate their cameras after several officers were disciplined for violating the department's body camera policy.
The Denver Post reports independent monitor Nick Mitchell identified at least 55 occasions in early 2017 when officers potentially violated the policy. Mitchell did not elaborate on each case in his report released Oct. 11.
Cmdr. James Henning of the investigative support division says commanders identified the issue after the department's rollout of body cameras was completed in early 2017.
Henning says instances of officers failing to activate their cameras have declined in the second half of the year since a new training video was issued and a system for auditing officers' use was implemented.
