DENVER – Scammers are using the FBI’s real telephone number and the threat of a federal investigation to try and get money out of you.

The FBI’s Denver office says the scammers will claim that people are under investigation by the FBI or other federal authorities and demand an immediate payment, lest they face arrest.

The FBI says that people on northern Colorado have recently be targeted by the scammers.

It warns people that it never will call or email you to demand money or threaten an arrest, and asks anyone who has been contacted by scammers claiming to be the FBI or any other federal agency to call them at 303-629-7171. Regional FBI offices can be found and contacted here.
