DENVER — The house was locked, and the garage door was closed, but criminals still found a way to get inside. Security footage from Jason Thomas shows a car pull up by his home, then the criminals get out and break into his truck to steal his garage door opener.

Denver Police are seeing a new trend in garage break-ins where the garage door opener is being used to gain easy access. They're telling people not to leave their garage door opener in the car.

"Treat your opener like you would treat your keys," said Sonny Jackson, a spokesperson with the Denver Police Department.

Jackson said criminals are driving through alleys and looking for opportunities to get into garages. If the garage door opener isn't available, they're forcing their way inside.

"We discovered Sunday morning that our door here from the garage to the yard was open," said Fran Simon who believes someone forced their way in through the side door.
