A two-vehicle crash sent a SUV over an embankment and into Cherry Creek on Sunday morning, according to Phil Champagne with Denver Fire.

The SUV, an Acura, landed upside down in the water near 8th Avenue and Speer Boulevard.

The driver, a man, was trapped in the crash. He was unconscious and not breathing after the accident, Champagne said.

Two guards from nearby Denver Health Medical Center and two passers-by jumped into the water to try to rescue the driver, but they didn't have the proper tools.

Denver firefighters sent in a specialized underwater team. They freed the trapped man, Champagne said.

The victim was taken to the nearby hospital. The victim's condition is unknown.

One firefighter fell 14 feet down the creek bank. He was taken to the hospital and may have a broken leg, Champagne said.
