COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - A suspected pipe bomb in a canvas bag in Colorado Springs turned out to be a device used to extract tetrahydrocannabinol from marijuana.
Police had treated the device as a possible bomb, calling the bomb squad to the area of 100 Mount View Lane to investigate.
They were concerned because the device was found after officers made contact with a man and woman who both had serious burns. Both were taken to a hospital for treatment while the suspicious package was under investigation.
Police tell our affiliate, KRDO-TV, reports the device was constructed of PVC pipe and was being used to extract the THC.
"Apparently these are used by filtering a chemical substance through the marijuana," Sgt. Darrin Abbink told KRDO-TV.
Abbink went on to say that the possible connection of the device to the injuries was still unclear.
