A mother was cited for child abuse after seven children were found home alone with no food, and in filthy conditions, police said.
Officers said they were called to a home on Monica Drive in Colorado Springs on Tuesday morning regarding a bicycle theft.
"During their investigation, officers identified the suspect as living at a house on Berryknoll Dr.," Colorado Springs police said.
Officers said while they were trying to find the suspect, they found seven children home alone.
"Further investigation found that the children had no food available to them, the house was extremely filthy, and the children were being left all day by themselves," Police said.
The Department of Human Services took the children and their mother, 31-year-old Ebony Lattimore, was cited for child abuse, police said.
The ages of the children were not released.
