COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. -
A Colorado Springs family is dealing with the heartache of losing their beloved dog.
They found Chico, a 4-year-old Chihuahua, shot to death on Saturday outside their Purcell Drive home, KRDO reported.
"I just want to know why," George Devoer told the TV station.
The Devoers said they let their dog out as usual on Saturday morning but he didn't come back inside.
When they went looking for him, they discovered him lying just outside their backyard.
"We had no idea what happened at first," Devoer told KRDO. Then, he noticed a bullet wound he believes was from a pellet gun or .22-caliber gun.
"He has never left our yard the entire four years we had him. He had to be coaxed out there," Devoer speculated.
The Devoers are offering a $1,000 reward for information that leads to the arrest and conviction of the shooter. They've posted fliers around the neighborhood and are warning neighbors to keep a close watch on their pets.
George Devoer worries the shooter could strike again.
"Everybody in the neighborhood has two dogs and two kids it seems," Devoer said.
"I just can't believe someone in broad daylight did what they did. I can't believe there isn't someone who saw something," Diana Devoer told KRDO.
She said the dog has helped them both deal with their cancer treatments. She said her grandchildren also developed a deep connection with him.
