Sheriff recommends charges against former Douglas County School District transportation chief

CALL7 Investigation finds money unaccounted for

DOUGLAS COUNTY, Colo. - The Douglas County Sheriff's Office is recommending criminal charges against the former head of the Douglas County School District's Transportation Department, after CALL7 Investigator John Ferrugia uncovered thousands of dollars were missing.

The CALL7 investigation found former DCSD Transportation Director Paul Balon had directed employees to take old buses to a local crusher and request cash for the salvage. Thousands of dollars that went to Balon was not deposited in district accounts. In all, about $11,000 was unaccounted for.

Sources familiar with the case tell the CALL7 Investigators the Douglas County Sheriff's Office has completed its initial criminal investigation and recommended Balon be charged with Felony Theft and Official Misconduct.

Balon resigned shortly after the initial CALL7 reports regarding his misconduct.

Acting Transportation Director Lance Yoxsimer, who was Balon's assistant, also handled the cash, but claimed he gave all of it to Balon.

The District Attorney will now review the evidence and decide whether to file criminal charges. A spokesperson for the Douglas County School District said late Wednesday afternoon she was unaware of the referral to the DA.
