Butterfly Bakery of New Jersey shuts; sugar found in sugar-free items

CLIFTON, N.J. - A New Jersey bakery has closed after federal officials found sugar in sugar-free items and fat content well above what was on the labels.

Butterfly Bakery promises sugar-free, no sugar added and gluten-free baked good. However, the Food and Drug Administration says tests showed the company's product labeling was false and misleading.

The FDA says a federal judge approved an injunction against Clifton-based Butterfly Bakery and its president for unlawfully distributing misbranded food.

Laboratory analysis found certain foods labeled sugar-free contained sugar. Another had 360 percent in excess of the saturated fat listed on the label.

The company said on its Facebook page said only 3 out of its 45 items were cited.

"We are confident that our product claims are true and we are continuing operations to satisfy our customer's needs," officials said on Facebook.
