A hounds nose is not whats getting him national attention. Its his ears.Harbor, a black-and-tan purebred coonhound from Boulder, will be awarded Tuesday with the 2012 Guinness World Records title for "longest ears on a living dog."His left ear is 12.25 inches long and his right ear is 13.5 inches long.Owner Jennifer Wert said when her 8-year-old hound was a puppy, he would trip on his ears and roll down the stairs. Hes grown into his ears now but sometimes its colossal size still brings him unwanted attention."Cars will literally stop in the street to take a closer look and get a picture. Often strangers will tug his ears which he really doesn't enjoy," Wert said.Wert said she sometimes will play with his ears and put them on this head so he could look like Princess Leia or use it to cover his face when he's sleeping, but most of the time she doesn't even think about its odd size."Most days I forget really how oddly long his ears are. He's a phenomenon in the world and he creates smiles wherever we go," Wert said.Tigger, a bloodhound from Illinois who died in 2009, still holds the record for longest ears ever. One was 13.5 inches long, the other 13.75 inches long.Contrary to popular belief, this coonhound's long ears are for smelling and not enhanced hearing. When moving around Harbor's ears will fall into a rhythm that helps sweep scents into his nose.
