Cheyenne Mountain Zoo is pleased to welcome the newest member of the family, a male reticulated giraffe calf born Tuesday.

The zoo said the giraffe was born around 1 a.m.

Veterinarians examined the giraffe Wednesday and "are happy to report he is healthy, active and nursing well," the zoo said in a news release.

By tradition, the giraffe won't be named for 30 days.

Zookeepers said the giraffe is 5 feet 4 inches tall and weighs about 148 pounds.

Guests can see the giraffe inside the giraffe barn. Zookeepers plan to let him outside for the first time later this week.

The giraffe's mother is named Uzuri. This is her fourth birth. The giraffe's father is Mawimbi.
