Donors: Make Sure Money Goes To Correct Emily Keyes Fund

POSTED: 6:19 pm MDT October 2, 2006
UPDATED: 4:53 am MDT October 3, 2006

Just as we did in the aftermath of the Columbine murders, Coloradans are opening their hearts and contributing to the family of Emily Keyes, the girl killed last week at Platte Canyon High School.

A memorial has been set up to help the survivors and Emily's family as they get on with their lives.

Several viewers have called 7NEWS asking how they can be sure their donations are used for that fund.

"When tragedy hits, we all want to help, and what I think we saw in Columbine is what we're seeing here, well intentioned but redundant effort to raise money," said Susan Liehe of the Denver Better Business Bureau.

Lehe said the best thing people can do is go to the bank or banks where funds have been set up following an event like this.

Citywide Bank and Wells Fargo Bank are acting on behalf of Emily's family.

Anyone who would like to donate to the fund can call any branch of either bank to get information on the accounts.

Emily's family said any money raised will be used for hospital bills. They said money left over will go to a scholarship fund in Emily's name that will help teens go to college.
