BOULDER, Colo. -- A missing Marine from Boulder may be the victim of foul play, investigators said Tuesday.Lance Cpl. Lance Hering has been missing since Aug. 29, when he left his parents' home to go climbing with a friend in nearby Eldorado Canyon.Steve Powers reported Hering had fallen during a climb and had hit his head. Powers later admitted making up the story and said he and Hering made up the story so that Hering could avoid returning to the Marines.
Powers was arrested on charges of false reporting on Sept. 6. Boulder sheriff's investigators said they have been unable to confirm much of his story. Cmdr. Phil West called Powers a "liar" in an earlier interview with the Boulder Daily Camera.Authorities were analyzing blood found at the location where Powers said Hering fell. The results of that testing were not released.West said the investigation into Hering's current whereabouts is continuing. Hering was due to return to Camp Pendleton, Calif. On Monday, but didn’t show up.
