Camp Provides Comforting Haven To Children Mourning Loss Of Loved One

Camp Comfort Helps Grieving Children With Healing Process

There is a special place in Colorado called Camp Comfort that is well-known to children who have lost someone close to them.

The children of late 7NEWS meteorologist Pam Daale said Camp Comfort has become "their special place." For them, there is nothing better than camping in the mountains of Colorado in the summer.

"I like to catch the fish," said 7-year-old Logan Peitzman, Pam's son.

"There's the zip line, horseback riding, hiking fishing," said Pam's daughter Taryn.

Pam lost her battle with breast cancer in April 2004. When Pam died, Taryn was just 8 years old and Logan was 5.

"I think she would like it, the wide open," said Taryn.

"After my mom died, Taryn and I each got a Livestrong bracelet," said Logan. "I wear mine all the time. I never take it off."

"They are still healing. Both of them are," said Pam's husband, Don. "I think you can't give them enough opportunities to talk about what it is like to lose your mom."

Don admits the family has had a hard time talking about their feelings after Pam's death.

Camp Comfort is a place for kids between ages 6 and 12 who are still trying to cope with losing a parent, a sister or a close friend.

"It's nice to know that you are not the only one who has had that happen to you, because I definitely can't always talk to Logan. He's not a girl," said Taryn, smiling.

Taryn has been to Camp Comfort twice.

This weekend it is Logan's turn to stay and he is already on the move and making friends.

"Something that I really like is that people never actually ask me here, that they usually do at school, is how my mom died. I don't like when they ask me that question," said Logan. "I just don't like to tell a lot of people."
