CALHAN, Colo. -- A large animal sanctuary in Colorado is vowing to stay open even though one of its owners passed away. The exotic cats of Big Cats of Serenity Springs near Calhan, has suffered the loss of their beloved caregiver.Karen Sculac dedicated her life to saving these exotic cats who are incapable of living in the wild. She fell ill with strep throat and died over the weekend from pneumonia.
"She was my best friend," said Karen's Husband Nick Sculac."The animals never asked to be put in that position. It's people who breed them and sell them as pets," said Nick. The volunteers at the sanctuary are determined to continue to care for the cats. Most of the 115 leopards, tigers and other big cats tolerate humans just fine.Big Cats of Serenity Springs is certified by the U.S. Department of Agriculture, the Department of Interior and the Divison of Wildlife."We feed 1,360 pounds of meat a day," said Nick. Each cat eats about 450 pounds of meat per month. They are in need of donations and volunteers. If you would like to donate to the Karen Sculac Memorial Fund, write to: C/O Big Cats of Serenity Springs, P.O. Box 112, Calhan, CO 80808.
