August 6, 2006: Vet Comes To Rescue Of Stray Cats

Dr. Erica Rambus Runs Mobile Cat Clinic Called Divine Feline

It seems stray cats are everywhere these days. This week's 7Everyday Hero comes to the rescue of the feral and alley cats with a mobile cat clinic.

Dr. Erica Rambus left her regular veterinarian job to start Divine Feline, a mobile cat clinic, in 2003.

"It's a feral cat operation. It's a trap neuter release," said Rambus.

Divine Feline, with the help of the Rocky Mountain Alley Cat Alliance, or RMACA, and the leadership and commitment of Rambus, has helped thousands of cats.

The nonprofit traps cats that were once domesticated but are now living in the wild. She spays and neuters them and tests them for infectious diseases.

"There's an estimated 150 to 200,000 feral cats just in metro Denver," said Jen Olbricht of RMACA.

Rambus takes her mobile operating room throughout Denver two days a week, spaying or neutering as many as 40 cats each trip.

"They recover with me overnight and then they're released back to their colonies the next day," said Rambus.

The feral kittens are removed from the colonies.

"If we leave them out there they're going to grow up and become feral so we really have no choice we have to take them with us," said Olbricht.

The cats each get medication for pain, an antibiotic injection, vaccines and fluids.

"We also open up the clinic to low cost spay and neutering for the community that we're working in so we target not only feral cats but low-income owned cats," said Olbricht.

"It's just an important project and I wouldn't trade it for anything in the world," said Rambus.
