Jeep Driver Dies When Falling Boulder Hits Him

POSTED: 6:25 am MDT August 1, 2006

A Texas man was identified as the victim of a freak accident on a four-wheel-drive back road near Ouray.

James F. Parker, 62, of Rowlett, Texas, was killed by a boulder Sunday as he drove a Jeep on a scenic but winding high-country road.

The Colorado State Patrol said that Parker died instantly when the large rock crashed through the top of the Jeep, striking him in the head.

Passenger Nancy Ingle, 56, also of Rowlett, saved her own life by grabbing the steering wheel of the Jeep to keep it from going over the edge of a 300-foot drop. She suffered a fractured wrist in the accident.

Investigators said the boulder was likely dislodged by rain and that additional rocks were falling while they were at the accident location along Camp Bird Road.

According the the State Patrol, Parker and Ingle were part of a Jeep tour, and their friends were following behind them when the rocks rolled down the mountainside.
