DENVER -- Deputies arrested a teenager over the weekend who is accused of stealing copper wire. The teen was caught Saturday night at the Qwest storage lot on Costilla Avenue in Arapahoe County. The Arapahoe County Sheriff’s Office Impact Team were working on a special assignment in the area of Costilla Avenue and Clinton Street when they saw the teen loading copper wire into a small truck.
The 17-year-old tried to tell deputies he had permission to take 200 to 300 pounds of the wire. The property manager disagreed. The suspect was released to his mother and his truck was impounded while deputies finish their investigation.Authorities say they have seen a recent surge in thefts of copper wiring and other metals by people who then sell or recycle the wire for profit.
