Police were investigating whether the child shown bruised and bound in a snapshot found outside a grocery store is a missing Florida boy.

Bound Child

"It's the most likely (tip) that we've gotten so far," said Sgt. Wendy Kipple.

Many tips have been received since the photograph showing a bound fair-haired child was found outside a City Market last month in this mountain town 55 miles west of Denver.

On Tuesday, police in Clearwater, Fla., called saying the boy could be Zachary M. Bernhardt, 8, who disappeared about a year ago.

"The child in the photograph and that child looked very similar," Kipple said.

Florida police say the 4-foot-6, 60-pound, blond, blue-eyed boy disappeared before dawn Sept. 11, 2000, from his home.

One of Zachary's relatives called police after she saw Denver news broadcasts on satellite TV.

But Kipple said it is difficult to determine if the photo shows the missing boy.

"If it is that child, it still doesn't tell us where he is. It might tell us who he is," she said.

Kipple said the Colorado Bureau of Investigation is enhancing the photo to see if more information can be gleaned.

Among clues, investigators are looking at the pine needles shown in the photograph to help determine where it was taken.

"We don't think the photograph was taken in this county," she said. "The pine needles shown are not indigenous."

Because it rained the day the picture was found, no fingerprints were found on the photograph.
