DENVER -- Former Colorado Gov. Dick Lamm was set to speak Thursday about illegal immigration at a gathering of business leaders in Denver. The Democrat, who supported a failed ballot proposal to ban state services to illegal immigrant, is being criticized for another speech earlier this week in Vail. The speech echoed the message of his new book, Two Wands, One Nation, in which he writes that blacks and Hispanics should take responsibility for their "underperformance" and follow the example of Jewish and Japanese-Americans.
State Rep. Terrance Carroll of Denver said people should talk about personal responsibility but he is offended by what he sees as the demonizing of groups of people.
